THURSDAY, JULY 16 · VERSE OF THE DAY

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

— Psalm 73:26

Context

Psalm 73 is Asaph's record of a near-miss faith collapse. He watches ruthless people thrive — healthy, wealthy, untouched by consequences — while he's broke and suffering. It almost breaks him. Verse 26 sits at the end, after he enters 'the sanctuary of God' (v.17) and gains perspective on their actual trajectory. This isn't victory-lap worship; it's the bruised honesty of someone who nearly walked away and is still catching his breath. The psalm became core to Israel's wisdom tradition precisely because it doesn't pretend the problem of evil is easy or that faith is always steady.

What it's actually saying

Hebrew: 'My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.' The word 'portion' (cheleq) is inheritance language — what you receive as your share of land, wealth, family legacy. Asaph is saying: my body's failing, my emotional reserves are shot, but God himself is what I get. Not God's blessings. Not answers. God. The verse admits total physical and psychological exhaustion ('may fail' can also mean 'waste away' or 'be spent') while simultaneously staking everything on God as the durable thing. It's not 'God strengthens me so I can keep going.' It's 'God is the strength — when I have none left, he's the whole substrate.'

How to apply it today

Next time you're running on empty — physically wiped, emotionally spent, spiritually numb — try this small shift: instead of asking God for energy to fix it, just sit with the idea that God himself might be enough for today. Not God plus a solution, not God plus better circumstances. Just God. You don't have to feel it. Asaph clearly didn't feel great. But notice whether naming that — 'You're my portion even when I've got nothing' — changes the shape of the exhaustion. Sometimes the only sustainable move is to stop trying to generate strength and let God be the floor you're already standing on.

Sit with this

Write one honest sentence about something in your life that's currently failing or giving out. Then write a second sentence that starts: 'Even so, God is my portion because…' and finish it however feels true today — even if it's small or uncertain.
